BECKENHAM DISTRICT TUBERCULOSIS
CARE COMMITTEE
The following report on the work of the local Tuberculosis Care
Committee has been submitted by the Hon. Secretary, Mr. M. E.
Forster, to whom I express my thanks.
" The Committee has just completed 25 years service amongst
the tubercular patients and their families in the Borough of
Beckenham.
Fullest co-operation with the Chest Clinics has been maintained
and only patients recommended by them are given consideration.
Close contact is kept with the Kent Council of Social
Service through the County Tuberculosis Care Committee.
Over £428 was spent, giving 87 grants to 25 families—7 of
these were new cases. One grant was in the form of an interest-free
loan of £125 to help with a Hire Purchase Agreement debt. Other
grants were:—
24 Christmas gifts ; 26 meat grants ; 10 fares ; 5 holidays;
5 coal; 4 clothing ; 3 Electricity Bills ; 2 Foster parents;
1 grant towards a holiday ; 2 milk and groceries ; 1 water
colours ; 1 radio licence. The Committee has three radios
which are on free loan.
The Committee's two Liaison Officers made numerous calls
on patients and were able to settle small problems on the spot.
The more complicated ones were brought before the Committee
at one of its eleven meetings.
The Committee is fortunate in having representatives in the
following Organisations:—Business Houses, W.V.S., British Red
Cross Society, S.S.A.F A, Citizens Advice Bureau, Firemen's
Benevolent Society, Rotary Club, Women's Institute, Townswomen's
Guild, West Wickham Community Council, Women's
Citizens, British Legion, Beckenham and Penge Free Church
Women's Council and Welfare Department
Fund raising Organisers brought in over £350 during the year
by the sale of ½d , Christmas Seals and a Jumble Sale Donations
were over £38
