difficulty, the parents of the children who had not been inspected,
were sent a circular letter inviting them to attend at the clinic for
inspection.
In addition, information was obtained from the School Attendance
Officers of the children attaining the age of five years during
1939, children who would normally have been admitted to school,
and the parents of these children were also invited to attend the
clinic for inspection.
The result of this was not quite so satisfactory as one would
have hoped, approximately 50% of those invited attending for
inspection. It is probable, however, that of those invited to attend,
many were not in Beckenham, private evacuation being fairly considerable
and this information was not available at the time. Approximately
eight hundred children were thus not inspected during the
year.
The results of the Annual Inspections were as follows :—
No. of inspections 45
„ ,, Children inspected 4,013
„ „ „ referred for treatment 2,934
,, ,, Children refused treatment 594
The comparable figures of attendances and treatment were
as follows:— 1938. 1939.
Attendances 4,258 3,538
Children treated 2,584 2,340
Fillings 3,978 3,402
Extractions 3,505 2,882
The extractions of permanent teeth numbered 603 and of these
89 were sound teeth removed for regulation purposes and 5 were
supernumerary teeth, making a total of 94, thus reducing the loss
of teeth due to caries to 509.
The number of cases of irregularity treated by extraction was
57 and by mechanical means 7.
Seven dentures were supplied to replace incisor teeth, in one
case following severe fracture and in six, following caries due to
early neglect.
One denture was repaired.
Three upper incisors were crowned following accidental fracture.
The number of scholars treated from the Secondary Schools
was 56 and they made 135 attendances for treatment.
