From our experience of house-to-house inspection we are justified
in assuming that in the more thickly populated parts of the District
the average number of persons per house is greater than the
average for the same districts as ascertained at the 1911 Census. If
this assumption should prove correct the population would be over
rather than under 35,000.
GENERAL CHARACTERS OF THE DISTRICT.
Beckenham is a residential suburb and there are practically no
industries. About one-half of the area is built upon. At the Census
in 1911 the principal occupations of the 8,708 occupied males were
as follows:—

General or Local Government 528
Of the 5,729 females engaged in occupations, the principal services
in which they were employed were as follows:—
Domestic indoor service 3578
Dressmakers 348

Laundry and Washing 215
NOTIFICATION OF BIRTHS.
The Notification of Births Act has been in force in this District
since 1908. During the year a total of 668 births, 652 live births and
16 still births were notified to me. Notification was not received
in respect of 38 births.
The corrected number of births registered with the Registrar of
Births during the calendar year was 668, 334 males and 334 females,
