(10) DIPHTHERIA.

The following table shows the incidence of diphtheria for the past four years:—

Year.Notifications.
194257
194335
19449
194516

During the year 1945, there was only one death
from diphtheria. This occurred in the case of a child
who died within one week of returning to Barking,
after being evacuated to the country.
(11) ARTIFICIAL IMMUNISATION.
The estimated mid-year population for 1945 of
children under the age of five years is 5,590 and of this
total 2,912 were successfully immunised. A similar
population estimate of children between the ages of
5 and 14 years is 11,740 and of this total 9,313 were
successfully immunised.
This means that for 1945, approximately 71 per
cent, of the child population of Barking was successfully
immunised against diphtheria.
Immunisation against whooping cough continued
but no requests were received for immunisation against
scarlet fever during the year.
