order made by the Borough Council and confirmed by the Minister of Health on the 7th
August, 1935.
The scheme submitted by the Council's Architect, Mr. A. J. Thomas, F.R.I.H.A., and
approved by the London County Council, consists of 4 two-room, 2 three-room, 43 four-room
and 6 five-room tenements, a total of 55 dwellings, consisting of 216 rooms. A contract, has
been entered into with Messrs. M. J. Gleeson, Ltd., to carry out the work in the sum of
£35,364. The total cost of the acquisition of the site was approximately £9,891.
The development of the site involved the making of a Closing Order in respect of a
portion of the footway in Nelson Street, which will be included in the estate. The Council
have also taken over the private roadway in Nelson Street, which will be maintained as a
public thoroughfare and will form an approach road to the estate.
The building is in course of construction and will afford accommodation under the
Housing Acts for families displaced by the Council's Orders from insanitary property.
Somers Town Extf.nsion.
The Council decided to make a small extension of their Somers Town estate at the
north-western corner, which involved the demolition of Nos. 32, 33 and 33a, Johnson Street,
the property of the Council, consisting of a fried fish shop, with living accommodation above,
and storage accommodation for the estate. In order to complete the scheme, however, it was
necessary to acquire No. 186, Seymour Street. The extension will provide accommodation for
a fried fish shop on the ground floor, a five-room flat on each of the first and second floors,
and one four-room and one three-room maisonette on the upper floors. Improved storage
facilities will also be available for the purposes of the estate.
The Council have placed a contract with Messrs. C. & F. Bryen to carry out the work
for the sum of £5,417 9s. 6d.
Leighton Road Site.
Plans for the development of the site acquired by the Council in Leighton Road for
the provision of working class accommodation are before the London County Council, so that
it is not possible to indicate the amount of accommodation which will be provided on this
estate. The area of the site is approximately acres and the site was purchased at a cost of
£11,000, exclusive of legal fees, etc.
Queen's Crescent Site.
The Council have acquired the site at present occupied by the Journeyman Tailors'
Benevolent Institution, which covers an area of approximately two acres at the junction of
Queen's Crescent and Prince of Wales Road, for the sum of £18,000, and have approved a
tentative lay-out for the development of the site for working class accommodation. The
plans, which embody a number of one-room flats to accommodate aged persons, are now before
the London County Council for approval.
It is proposed to use the accommodation, when available, for the purpose of abating
overcrowding in the Borough.
Housing Site in Camden Park Road.
The Borough Council have decided to acquire a site, formerly used as a reservoir, in
Camden Park Road. The site is approximately 1 i acres in area and a tentative lay-out has
been approved. It is proposed to use the accommodation, when available, for the purpose of
abating overcrowding in the Borough.
