Vital Statistics.
Population.
The population calculated to the middle of 1904
was 52,358, an increase of 2,678 in twelve months.
The number of inhabited houses was 8,678, and
uninhabited 290.
The following table shows the population and the number of the inhabited houses at the five preceding censuses:—

In making my calculations 1 allow six persons to
each occupied house, and one for each unoccupied house.
The census of 1901 showed the average to be 6.1
per house.
This method of calculating the population is the one
adopted by previous Medical Officers for the District.
Births and Birth-rates.
During the year 1904 there were 1,450 births
registered. The birth-rate per 1,000 persons living was
27.69. The London birth-rate was 27.9.
