Area of Borough: (a) excluding area covered by water, 1,427.8 acres; (b) including area covered
by water, 1,473 acres.
Rateable value of the Borough: £3,418,690.
Sum represented by a penny rate: £13,549.
Number of residential units (separate assessments): 22,579.
Resident population: 1921 census—104,173; 1931 census—97,627.
Registrar-General's estimate of the home population (which includes members of the armed forces
stationed in the area and is used in calculating various rates in this report): 1950—78,260.

Death Rate of Infants under one year of age—All infants per 1,000 live births, 22.09; legitimate
infants per 1,000 legitimate live births, 21.53; illegitimate infants per 1,000 illegitimate live
births, 25.64.
Marriages.—The total number of marriages was 1,439, being 22 below the number for 1949 and 55
above the average for the previous 10 years. The rate for persons married in 1950 was 37 per 1,000
of the estimated civilian population.
Deaths.—The deaths given in Table I are classified under the 36 headings based on the Abbreviated
List of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases, Injuries and Causes of Death, 1948,
which came into use for this purpose as from the 1st January, 1950. The new classification differs
in many respects from that previously employed, which was based upon the International Classification
of 1938, and it is to be noted, for example, that "typhoid and paratyphoid fevers," "scarlet fever,"
"polioencephalitis" and "acute infective encephalitis" have been removed from the Table. These
diseases are now included under the group "other infective and parasitic diseases" (No. 9 in the
Table). Amongst other diseases and conditions which no longer appear in the Table are "diarrhoea
(under 2 years of age)" and "other digestive diseases," now included under "gastritis, enteritis
