SECTION B.—GENERAL PROVISION OF HEALTH SERVICES.
Staff.—In consequence of the appointment of Dr. W. H. S. Wallace, Deputy Medical Officer of Health
and Deputy Medical Referee for Cremation, to a position as Divisional Medical Officer under the
London County Council, Dr. Cedric John Charles Britton, the Borough Council's Bacteriologist, was
appointed as occasional Deputy Medical Officer of Health and Deputy Medical Referee for the St.
Marylebone Crematorium as from the 5th July, 1948.
Mr. George Smith, Senior Sanitary Inspector and Food Inspector, retired on the 31st January,
1948, after 42 years' service with the Council. As from the 1st February, 1948, Mr. E. E. Willis,
Drainage Inspector, assumed the office of Senior Sanitary Inspector; Mr. H. E. Scoble, a District
Sanitary Inspector, was appointed as Food Inspector; and Mr. H. E. P. Corline, a District Sanitary
Inspector, took over the duties of Drainage Inspector for the northern part of the Borough. Mr. F. C.
Cook, a retired Inspector who continued his appointment in a temporary capacity, finally terminated
his service on the 12th January, 1948. Two newly-appointed Sanitary Inspectors commenced duty
during the year—Mr. J. E. Broadhead on the 19th January, 1948, and Mr. A. H. Chappell on the
1st June, 1948.
Miss C. E. Durant, Health Visitor, resigned on the 30th April, 1948, on account of ill-health, after
33 years in the local government service, including 27 years at St. Marylebone.
Mr. P. C. Bedward, a General Division Assistant, was called up for military service on the 17th
June, 1948.
On the transfer of certain members of the staff of the Department to the London County Council or
the North West Metropolitan Regional Hospital Board under the provisions of the National Health
Service Act, 1946, the Council recorded their appreciation of the work carried out by these officers—
medical, dental, nursing, administrative and clerical—during their period of service under the
Borough Council.
Training of Sanitary Inspectors.—The Council continued to participate in the Ministry of Health
scheme to secure the supply and training of sanitary inspectors by providing practical training facilities
for ex-service student sanitary inspectors taking intensive courses at the Battersea Polytechnic.
Ten students spent about two months each in the Public Health Department, and it was subsequently
announced that all had passed the officially recognised qualifying examination for sanitary inspectors
conducted by the Royal Sanitary Institute and Sanitary Inspectors' Examination Joint Board.
