*Births—Notification.—The number of notifications received under the Public Health (London)
Act, 1936, Section 255, was 1,177: live births, 1,152; stillbirths, 25. Sources of the notifications
were: from parents 3; from doctors 17 ; from midwives 56; from hospitals, nursing homes, etc.,
1,101. Of the births notified, 419 took place at the Middlesex Hospital, 217 at Paddington Hospital,
and 121 occurred at home. Of those notified as taking place in St. Marylebone, 389 belonged to other
Boroughs.
Marriages.—The total number of marriages was 1,659, being 79 below the number for 1947 and 227
above the average for the previous 10 years. The rate for persons married in 1948 was 43 per 1,000
of the estimated civilian population.
Deaths.—The total number of deaths (796) shown in the following table is inclusive of persons who,
though normally resident in the Borough, died elsewhere in England and Wales, but exclusive of
persons who, though they died in St. Marylebone, were ordinarily resident in other parts of England
or Wales. Deaths of persons ordinarily resident outside the borders of England and Wales are
included in the St. Marylebone figures, if they occur in the Borough.

No death occurred from the following causes not shown in the table ; Typhoid and paratyphoid fevers,
cerebro-spinal fever, scarlet fever, whooping cough, diphtheria (Code Nos. 1-5), measles, acute poliomyelitis
and polioencephalitis, acute infectious encephalitis (Nos. 10-12), puerperal and post-abortive sepsis, other
maternal causes (Nos. 29-30).
