The following table gives the figures for each of the years from 1905. It will
be noted that though there have been occasional rises the tendency has all the time
been downwards. The reasons for this will be discussed later.

RESPIRATORY DISEASES.
The number of deaths due to bronchitis, pneumonia and other diseases of the
organs of respiration was 420 and the death rate 4.41 per 1,000. Of this number,
bronchitis caused 220 and pneumonia 174. In the case of bronchitis, 150 were
amongst persons aged 65 and upwards and 51 amongst those between 45 and 65.
Of the persons dying of pneumonia, 63 were aged over 65. As regards
pneumonia, it may be noted that the practice of carrying out disinfection after the
occurrence of death from this cause was continued.
CANCER OR MALIGNANT DISEASE.
The number of deaths due to cancer was 148 and the death-rate 1.4 per 1,000 of
the population. The following table shows the situation of the disease, and the table
on page 63, the age at which death occurred.
