Th1s bel1ef 1s supported by the fact that as soon as the agreement was settled,
and the scheme was 1n work1ng order, the numbers of ch1ldren bathed began to
1ncrease.
The date of s1gn1ng the agreement was 7th October, 1911, and the Counc1l
undertook to bath any verm1nous ch1ld sent from the Publ1c Elementary Schools 1n
the Borough for a sum of 2/., th1s sum to cover any number of attendances by the
ch1ld at the baths over a per1od not exceed1ng one calendar month.
Boys attend on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fr1days, between 9 and 1, and g1rls
on the same days between 1 and 4.
The ch1ldren are brought by a school nurse, who rema1ns 1n attendance dur1ng
the bath1ng, and s1gns a card when the ch1ld 1s f1nally cleansed. Th1s procedure of
the London County Counc1l 1s carr1ed out under sect1on 122 of the Ch1ldren Act, by
wh1ch they are empowered to cleanse a ch1ld after the parents have fa1led to do so.
At the same t1me as the agreement was entered 1nto w1th regard to the school
ch1ldren, a s1m1lar step was taken 1n relat1on to 1nmates of Common Lodg1ng Houses
1n the Borough found to be verm1nous and sent by the London County Counc1l
for cleans1ng. 1n respect of each case cleansed a sum of one sh1ll1ng 1s pa1d.
The number of persons sent under th1s agreement between the date of s1gn1ng
and the end of the year was comparat1vely small.
1n the case of the ch1ldren, 1t may be ment1oned that the home of every ch1ld sent
as verm1nous to the baths 1s v1s1ted and exam1ned by the women 1nspectors and
arrangements made for d1s1nfect1on of bedd1ng, &c., wherever poss1ble.
The usual table show1ng the numbers of adults and ch1ldren bathed each month
1s appended. The number of ch1ldren 1s d1st1nctly lower than 1n 1910 ; the number
of adults h1gher by nearly 1,000. A table show1ng the numbers of persons us1ng the
baths s1nce they were opened 1s also g1ven.
