BLACK SMOKE NU1SANCES.
The total number of observat1ons of ch1mneys made by the 1nspectors was 1,292,
and 11 nu1sances were d1scovered.
A report was subm1tted to the Publ1c Health Comm1ttee at each meet1ng w1th
regard to the number of observat1ons made and nu1sances d1scovered. 1n each case
1n wh1ch a nu1sance had been detected, the owner was commun1cated w1th and any
explanat1on he had to offer was cons1dered by the comm1ttee along w1th the reports of
the 1nspector.
Act1ng on the 1nstruct1ons of the comm1ttee 8 letters of caut1on were sent and 1
not1ce was served. 1n no 1nstance was 1t found necessary to 1ssue a summons 1n
respect of nu1sance from black smoke.
REMOVAL OF HOUSE REFUSE.
Dur1ng 1911 the removal and destruct1on of house refuse was carr1ed out, as 1n
1910, by Messrs. Mead & Co., Ltd., The Wharves, Padd1ngton, under contract.
The total cost for the whole borough was £ 10,500, the f1gure for the North
D1str1ct be1ng ,£3,550, and for the South .£6,950.
The contract 1n respect of the former commenced 1st Apr1l, 1911, and for the
latter was accepted for 2 years from 1st Apr1l, 1910.
The follow1ng tabular statement g1ves the number of compla1nts, letters, and
refusals rece1ved 1n respect of the removal of house refuse, together w1th the f1nes
lev1ed and recovered by the Counc1l for contravent1ons of the terms of the contracts
dur1ng the last 8 years.
