NUISANCES.
Work of the Sanitary Inspectors.
The continued increase in the work of the Public Health Department is
well illustrated by the figures relating to the receipt of complaints, the
number of nuisances discovered by the Inspectors and the service of statutory
notices. During 1909 there were 1,899 complaints received, as compared
with 1,768 in 1908, an increase of 131. In respect of nuisances, 514 statutory
notices were served, being an increase of 234 over the previous year,
when 280 were sent out. Of the notices, 49 were served on owners to
provide a proper and sufficient supply of water to the upper storeys of
tenement houses under the London County Council (General Powers) Act of
