Appointment of Female Sanitary Inspector.
In answer to an advertisement, sixteen applications for
the post vacated by Miss O'Kell were received. One of
these had not the necessary legal qualifications, reducing
the number to fifteen. Five of the applicants appeared to
the writer superior to the rest, and were selected for
presentation to the Committee. Out of these five the
Committee selected Miss Frances A. Baker, who has
entered upon her duties.
The Laboratory.—Sale of Food and Drugs Act
(Table VI).
A full list of the various articles of food, drink and
drugs analysed during the quarterns to be found in Table VI,
page 43. Out of 150 samples submitted by the Inspectors.
1 sample of gin, 7 samples of milk, 1 sample of butter, and
1 sample of margarine, formed the subject matter for
prosecution as follows :—
Herbert Clanchy, of 51, Upper Berkeley Street, was
fined 40/- and 25/- costs, for selling gin 39.5 degrees under
proof.
Mrs. Annie Callard, of 91, Salisbury Street, was fined
£1 and 2s. costs for exposing for sale margarine without a
proper label.
John Gowlett, of i 13, Crawford Street, was fined under
the Sale of Food and Drugs Act and Margarine Act £3 10s.,
with 25s. costs, for selling butter adulterated with other
fats.
Arthur Staines, of 37, Barrow Hill Road, was fined £2,
with 12s. 6d. costs, for selling milk diluted with 12.5 %
water.
James Jones, of 53, Charlbert Street, was fined £5,
with 12s. 6d. costs, for selling milk diluted with 13.2 %
water.
