As the law stands at present, Jews and Quakers are the only
religious persuasions in England (outside the Established Church)
whose ministers are able to join couples in matrimony without the
presence of the Registrar. A Bill is now before Parliament which
proposes to relieve Non.conformist ministers from this disability.
DEATHS OF INFANTS.
Twenty.nine and a half per cent, of the deaths from all causes
were those of infants aged less than twelve months; for, out of 4,818
children born alive, 814 died before reaching the age of one year,
thus giving a death rate, calculated upon the births, of 169 0 whilst
the corresponding rate for the whole of London was 158.
DEATHS OF YOUNG CHILDREN.
Nearly half the deaths (1,259, that is 45.6 per cent.) were those
of children aged less than five years, giving a proportion equivalent
to a rate of 70 0, calculated upon the estimated population of young
children.
OLD PERSONS DEATH RATE.
The deaths of old people, that is to say persons over sixty.five
years of age, numbered 472. This gives a rate of 99.4 per thousand,
calculated upon the estimated population of persons over that age.
SPECIAL CAUSES OF DEATHS.
Table III. is prepared from the weekly death returns of the
District Registrars, and from the monthly return of extra.parochial
Institution deaths received from Somerset House. At the foot of
the table is shewn a mortality rate for each of the diseases or
classes of disease therein enumerated.
