This total of 1415 indicates a marriage rate of 10 9 to every
thousand persons living or, as in each marriage there are two contracting
parties, 21.9 of our population enters the bonds of matrimony
during the year. Eighty.five of these weddings were purely civil
contracts inasmuch as the presence of the Registrar was necessary
to legalize the ceremony, though most of the weddings took place
in chapels.
