UNSOUND FOOD SURRENDERED AT RIVERSIDE WHARVES.
As a result of the daily inspection of City wharves, 87 loads of unsound food were removed
from these places during the year by the Cleansing Department.

GENERAL SANITARY WORK.
Artizans' Dwellings, Stoney Lane, Houndsditch.—These Buildings, erected by the late
Commissioners of Sewers and opened in January, 1885, stand upon ground formerly the
site of several courts and alleys in the Ward of Portsoken.
There are five "blocks" of Dwellings, severally named King's, Queen's, Prince's, North,
and South, designed for occupation by persons of the artizan class, some of the ground
floors being let as shops. The Buildings contain 501 rooms, arranged in 241 tenements, and
are occupied by 751 persons, compared with 773 in 1927. 79 per cent. are adults and 21 per
cent. children (under 14 years).
The number of births was 5, viz.: 1 male and 4 females. The birth-rate was 6.6 per
1,000, which is 2.3 per 1,000 below the average for the previous five years.
The death rate for 1928 was 9.3 per 1,000 per annum.
In addition to these Artizans' Dwellings, the Corporation have erected in Hutchison
Street, in connection with a slum clearance scheme, a block of buildings—Bearsted House—
which, at the end of 1928 were occupied by 109 persons, of whom 83 per cent. were adults
and 17 per cent. children. The building contains 88 rooms arranged in 24 tenements and,
as in the case of the Artizans' Dwellings, shops—7 in number—are provided on the ground
floor.
No births or deaths were recorded during the year.

The birth-rate in these Dwellings reached a maximum of 46.9 per 1,000 in 1896, and has
since been falling irregularly, but almost progressively. The present rate is 6.6. The
rate last year was 7.8.
The baths, provided for the use of tenants of these Buildings, which were opened in
May, 1904, continue to be extensively used, the number of persons bathing during 1928
being 11,150, of whom 4,173 were males and 6,977 were females.
