In the eleven cases where the percentage of fat exceeded 4.2 it was observed that seven
of these samples were taken from churns in course of delivery at railway stations, which
were thoroughly plunged previous to the samples being taken; three were taken from vessels
in shops where the neglect to plunge the milk would account for the high amount of fat;
and another was taken from a churn carried on a milk barrow.
Twenty-five requests were received from purveyors of milk, from whom samples of
milk had been taken, asking for samples to be procured in course of transit or delivery from
the respective suppliers, in accordance with the Milk and Dairies (Consolidation) Act, 1915.
On one occasion it was necessary to ask another Authority to procure such samples at a railway
terminus outside the area of the City of London, and six samples were accordingly
obtained and dealt with. These samples were certified to be genuine.
THE PUBLIC HEALTH (CONDENSED MILK) REGULATIONS, 1923 and 1927.
Five samples of different brands of condensed milk were taken and submitted to the
Public Analyst, as follows:—
Condensed Full Cream Milk, Sweetened 2
Condensed Skimmed or Machine Skimmed Milk, Sweetened 2
Condensed Skimmed Milk, Unsweetened -
Condensed Full Cream Milk, Unsweetened 1
Total 5
These samples were certified genuine as regards equivalent contents and composition.
In one instance there was a minor defect in the printing of the statutory declaration on the
label, and the attention of the manufacturers was called to the matter.
THE PUBLIC HEALTH (DRIED MILK) REGULATIONS, 1923 and 1927.
Two samples of dried milk were taken and submitted to the Public Analyst, as follows :—
Dried Full Cream Milk 1
Dried Machine Skimmed Milk 1
These were found to be satisfactory in all respects except that the attention of the manufacturers
of the sample of Dried Full Cream Milk was called to the fact that part of the
statutory declaration was not printed in block type as required by the Regulations.
