* The notification of this disease is voluntary in the City of London.
It will be seen from the foregoing that during the year, excluding Chicken.pox,
108 Certificates were received, including 16 "duplicates," and four in which the
diagnosis was subsequently found to be incorrect.
The total number of cases of "notifiable infectious disease" was, therefore, 88, as
compared with 66 for the previous year. The total number of cases of Scarlet Fever
reported was 45, compared with 33 last year.
These figures call for no special comment. The large number of cases of Scarlet
Fever which have been notified in Greater London during the year naturally has had
an effect upon City residents who are surrounded by a numerous and dense population.
Any abnormal increase of infection is readily conveyed from outlying parts to the centre.
The following is a Return of infectious diseases notified, exclusive of Chicken.pox,
in the City of London, with the percentages of such cases removed for treatment
to hospitals or nursed at home during 1913, compared with the figures for the
previous five years:—
