Number of Persons occupying tenements of different sizes.
Table 4 shows the proportion per 1,000 persons enumerated in tenements of
various sizes.
In the last line of the following table it will be seen that the largest separate grouping
of the City population, viz., 219 per 1,000 inhabit tenements of three rooms, the next
highest proportion, viz., 217 per 1,000, tenements of two rooms ; 174 per 1,000 inhabit
tenements of four rooms, and 63 per 1,000 inhabit tenements of one room, the
remainder or 327 per 1,000 inhabit tenements of more than four rooms. The number
of persons occupying these different sized tenements does not quite run parallel with
the available tenements as shown in the previous table. There are more tenements of
two rooms than three rooms, but the excess is not great enough to balance the larger
number living in tenements of the latter size.

Average Number of Occupants per Room.
Table 5 shows the average number of occupants per room in tenements of various
sizes.
It will be noticed that in tenements of one to four rooms the average number of
occupants per room in the City is less than in London as a whole. In certain districts
in London the number of occupants of one room tenements exceeds two per
room, e.g.:—Bermondsey 2.05, Holborn 2.06, Finsbury 2.15, Bethnal Green 2.2,
Shoreditch 2.26, and Stepney 2.29.
