COLD STORES.
As each year shows an increase in the amount of meat imported into this country,
so the work re meat inspection at the Cold Stores has to keep pace with it.
At present there are within the City of London 12 Cold Stores with a capacity of
1,008,000 carcases of mutton or252,000 quarters of beef. During the year 1912 the
number of Stores will be increased to 13, and the capacity to 1,098,000 carcases
of mutton or 273,000 quarters of beef.
It is difficult to keep constant watch over the condition of all goods entering and
leaving the Stores at all hours, night and day.
Generally the proprietors give the Meat Inspectors every information and assistance
required, but occasionally information is received, not from the source it ought to come
from, that goods of a doubtful condition are in a Store.
The Public Health Act gives power to prosecute in such cases, and it is to be
hoped that it will be unnecessary to bring the section of the Act into operation.
As the Corporation has now arranged to return to the owners the residual value
(less expenses, &c.) of all meat (other than diseased meat) destroyed, ex Cold Stores, a
considerable amount of extra work will in future require to be done by the clerical staff.
The following record shows the variety of goods placed in Cold Stores and
subsequently found unfit for human food.
