Australian Meat.
The same system of examination and record keeping re Australian beef has been
maintained since the first consignment was notified to this Department, the whole of it
being carefully examined. From information supplied, it appears that the new staff
of Meat Inspectors took up duty in Australia in the month of February, and the
results of their work could not be seen until the middle of the summer.
These results have not been so satisfactory as those concerned in this country
desire, but it is easy for those who have control of a large inspection staff to understand
how many difficulties there are in organising a new system of meat inspection,
especially at centres so widely apart as in Australia, e.g., finding the suitable men for
each part of the work, &c.
Nevertheless there is an improvement shown in some of the latest consignments,
and it is to be hoped that the improvement will not only be maintained, but that we
may be able to state in the next Annual Report the important fact that Australian
beef is now arriving free from parasitic nodules.
Certificates granted by the Veterinary Inspector.
