STREET GULLIES.
Several complaints were received during the summer months of nuisance of
smells from street gullies in the public thoroughfares. In dry weather this is
sometimes due to want of flushing, but in a large number of cases the
nuisance arises through faulty construction, many of these gullies being
untrapped.
The City Engineer is giving special attention to this matter, and where
complaints are made owing to this cause these appliances are being reconstructed
greatly to the relief of passers by and persons living in the vicinity.
SEWER VENTILATORS IN ROADWAY'S.
These also are from time to time the subject of complaint. It has been found
that the best way—although a somewhat costly one—of abating the evil is to
close the ventilators in the roadway and substitute large iron ventilating shafts
attached to the wall of a neighbouring building. At times some little
difficulty is experienced in obtaining the consent of the owner to the erection
of the proposed shaft, but in most instances they are willing to render assistance
towards the abatement of what is an intolerable nuisance under certain
conditions of atmosphere, &c.
LEADENHALL MARKET.
The whole of the drainage throughout the market has been re-constructed
and the system of drainage ventilation re-modelled. New soil and water-pipes
have been fitted, and in some cases water-closets were removed from basements
where they could not be efficiently ventilated.
removal of fish offal.
The contract with Messrs. F. S. Hemplieman and Co. for the removal of
Fish Offal expired on the 21st May, 1907, and on the recommendation of the
City Engineer and your Medical Officer of Health was renewed for a further
period of twelve months.
The conditions of the contract require that the Contractor collect and remove,
free of charge, between the hours of 7 p.m. and 9 a.m., all fish offal from the
Corporation Markets and Fishmongers' premises in the City, to the entire
satisfaction of the Medical Officer of Health, in specially constructed galvanised
iron bins, of a pattern approved by the Medical Officer of Health, and to
thoroughly cleanse and disinfect such bins before returning them to the
markets and shops.
DRAINAGE, RED BULL WHARF, UPPER THAMES STREET.
In the course of some building operations at this place, which has been
acquired for the purpose of a cold storage depot, it was found that the drain
from the Wharf also received the drainage from some premises in Red Bull
Yard adjoining.
