COMMON LODGING-HOUSES.
24-25, New Street, Bishopsgate.
4, Vine Street, Minories.
These premises formerly used as common lodging-houses and closed in
February, 1906, have since been demolished, and police dwellings erected on
their sites.
116, Middlesex Street.
The " Salvation Army Working Men's Hotel and Shelter," No. 116, Middlesex
Street, is the only common lodging-house in the City. It provides
sleeping accommodation for 453 persons, and was opened on the 7th
February, 1906.
On the 27th February, 1906, when reporting the opening of this place to
the Sanitary Committee, I expressed the opinion that the establishment of
a common lodging-house of such large dimensions within the City would
probably result in an increase in the number of persons chargeable upon the
ratepayers as destitute sick inmates removable to the City Infirmary.
