WINKLES.
Four cases were reported during the year, in which winkles were suspected
of having caused Enteric Fever, the winkles having been obtained from
Billingsgate in each instance.
The first case occurred at Wandsworth in February, another at Woolwich in
March, and a third at East Ham in May, but in neither instance could any
definite information be obtained as to the source of supply.
The fourth case of this kind occurred in September at Wandsworth, but as a
month had elapsed since the winkles were purchased, the source of supply,
as in the previous case, could not be identified. It was ascertained, however, that
they were obtained through an agent in Glasgow, who purchased supplies from a
great number of places in the Western Isles of Scotland. Some of these are
known to be polluted, and the authorities in which they are situated have
taken steps to prevent winkles from being collected from them.
