Of the 97 small confectioners and light refreshment shops in the City
who sold ice creams, 88 or 90*7 per cent, were owned by foreigners, compared
with 90*8 per cent, in 1906.
There was a slight increase of the number of itinerant ice cream vendors
in the City last year, 40 being noted, as compared with 32 in 1906. No
case was reported of a barrow being found not bearing the name and address
of the manufacturers of the article sold. This was doubtless due to the
prosecution, in 1906, of eight itinerant vendors, who failed to exhibit such
notice as required by the Act.
It was found that in every case the ice creams sold by itinerant merchants
were made outside the City.
During 1907 there were 57 places in the City where ice creams were
manufactured, against 73 in 1906, the owners of the remaining 150 premises
in the City dealing in this article obtaining it from manufacturers in other
districts. Upon making enquiries of authorities outside the City with regard
to the latter, it was reported that in six cases sanitary improvements were
required, and in each instance the sale of ice cream from the places in question
was prohibited until the necessary sanitary improvements had been carried out.
All ice cream manufactured in the City was prepared under satisfactory
conditions, with one exception, where it was made at a small tenement house
that was quite unfit for the purpose ; upon being served with a notice to
discontinue the manufacture of ice cream on the premises, the owner at once
transferred his business to Stepney.
