CONTAMINATED MILK SUPPLIES.
In my Annual Report for last year the results were given of a bacteriological
examination of a series of samples of milk representing the supply to
the City from the following 22 Counties:—
Bedfordshire. Gloucestershire. Nottinghamshire.
Berkshire. Hertfordshire. Oxfordshire.
Buckinghamshire. Huntingdon. Somersetshire.
Cambridgeshire. Leicestershire. Staffordshire.
Derbyshire. Lincolnshire. Suffolk.
Dorsetshire. Middlesex. Warwickshire.
Essex. Norfolk. Wiltshire.
Worcestershire.
These samples yielded the following results:—
| Character of Milk. | Number of Samples. | Percentage. |
|---|---|---|
| Clean and pure | 19 | 48.7 |
| Bacillus tuberculosis | 3 | 7.9 |
| Staphylococcus pyogenes aureus | 7 | 17.9 |
| Bacillus enteritidis Gaertner | 10 | 25.5 |
| Total | 39 samples. | 100.0 |
This examination showed that much of the milk supplied to the City was
seriously contaminated. It was therefore considered advisable to make a
further investigation of the character of milk consigned to City dealers, and
in August last another series of milk samples for the undermentioned 22
Counties was taken, viz.:—
Berkshire. Huntingdon. Surrey.
Buckinghamshire. Hampshire. Somersetshire.
Cambridgeshire. Leicestershire. Staffordshire.
Derbyshire. Norfolk. Warwickshire.
Dorsetshire. Northamptonshire. Wiltshire.
Essex. Oxfordshire. Worcestershire.
Gloucestershire. Rutland.
Hertfordshire. Suffolk.
These samples were submitted to Dr. Klein, who reported as follows:—
"The appended Tables give the summary of results obtained by
"injecting guinea-pigs with the milk delivered here by your Inspector
"May between August 2nd and August 23rd inclusive. As in the
"former tests, of each sample 300 cubic centimetres were allowed to
"sediment, and this sediment was injected in about equal proportions
"into one guinea-pig peritoneally, and into a second guinea-pig
" subcutaneously.
"As will be noticed in the Tables, several animals died spontaneously,
"viz.:—
"Guinea-pig 5a.— Subcutaneously injected with sample 5. This
"animal showed extensive pneumonia, but no microbes could be
"discovered.
