FACTORY AND WORKSHOP ACT, 1901.
In the last Annual Report attention was called to the great increase of
work which must fall upon the Department.
In September, 1901, a systematic inspection of workshops and workplaces
in the City was initiated on my suggestion in anticipation of the
requirements of the Act, which came into force the 1st January of this year,
with the result that 745 workrooms were inspected, measured, &c., involving
some 1,190 inspections (including re-inspections).
Numerous defects of a structural character were discovered, but as these
inspections were made at the end of the year, most of the remedial works
necessary were effected during 1902, and are embodied in the general summary
of the work for the year.
