Special grants totalling £9,750 have been approved towards the cost of modernisation
and improvements at two mother and baby homes. One of these homes, which carried
out excellent work for many years in small and inconvenient premises in London, has
moved to a larger home outside the county which is being completely adapted and
modernised to provide accommodation for 22 girls and 13 babies. A second home, with
large institutional wards each for 16-20 girls, is to be completely modernised; the improvements
will necessarily reduce the total accommodation available by a few places.
Child protection
In six health divisions the visiting of foster children under the Children Act, 1958 and
the inspection of the premises in which these children are living is undertaken for the
Children's Officer by health visitors, who are designated as ' child protection visitors
In these divisions the number of children supervised by child protection visitors on 31
March, 1962 was 516.
During the year one successful application was made to a Juvenile Court to have a
foster child removed from the care of a foster mother because of unfitness. The child was
received into care by the Council.
Marriage guidance
Grants totalling £8,000 for the year ending 31 March, 1963 were made to the London
Marriage Guidance Council, the Catholic Marriage Advisory Council and the Family
Discussion Bureau.
