Thus, of the increase of 2.6 in the infant mortality rate for infants up to 1 year of
age, 1.6, or 62 per cent. of it is attributable to deaths of infants within twenty-eight days
of birth.
The distribution of causes of death in the first four weeks of life in descending order of magnitude in 1954 and 1955 was as follows:
