Replacements
Division 2—Westbourne Park Road (St. Stephen's), Paddington.—Prefabricated buildings,
partly erected during the war, were completed. The nursery replaced the Maida Vale
day nursery, 14 Blomfield Road, Paddington, which was derequisitioned.
Division 3—Springdale Day Nursery, Springdale Road, Stoke Newington.—The opening
of this nursery which was completed at the end of 1952, enabled the nursery at
6 Clephane Road, Islington, to be closed. These premises were held on requisition but
negotiations were opened with a view to securing a lease for maternity and child
welfare purposes.

Closures
Division 5—University House Day Nursery, Betlmal Green.—Work was completed on
an additional wing to accommodate ten babies.
Division 1—Fulham Babies Hospital Day Nursery, Broomhouse Road, Fulham.—On the
closure of the nursery these premises which were held on lease were declared surplus to
Health Committee requirements.
Division 9—Southfields Day Nursery, 72 West Hill Road, Wandsworth.—This nursery was
closed to enable the premises to be demolished to make way for the completion of a
block of flats. No suitable alternative accommodation being obtainable the children
were admitted to neighbouring nurseries.

Division 6—Amersham Road Day Nursery, Deptford.—Work was commenced on
adaptations to provide additional accommodation on the first floor. When ready this
will permit the closure of Evelyn Street day nursery which is to be demolished.
Maternity and child welfare centres
Replacements
Division 3—South Islington Welfare Centre, 6 Clephane Road, Islington.—These premises
became vacant on removal of the former day nursery and were then brought into use
as a welfare centre to replace very inadequate accommodation at Tibbcrton Square
Welfare Centre which was derequisitioned. A midwife's clinic held at Bentham Court,
Islington, was also transferred to 6 Clephane Road.
Division 5—St. George's Welfare Centre, Library Place, Stepney.—New purpose-built
accommodation was provided as part of a scheme for a new temporary library built
by the Stepney Borough Council. The St. George's Town Hall Welfare Centre was
closed and the accommodation released.
Division 7—Blackheath Hill Welfare Centre, Merton Place, Greenwich.—The erection of a
prefabricated hut was completed and the centre was transferred from unsatisfactory
accommodation at the Salvation Army Hall, Romer Avenue. The new centre is
administered by Division 7 but also serves areas in Division 6.
Provision of
additional
centres
Division 3—Archway Welfare Centre, Congregational Church Hall, Junction Road,
Islington.—A new centre was opened in accommodation provided in a newly erected
church hall.
Division 6—St. Alban's Church Hall, William Barefoot Drive, Woolwich.—A new centre
was opened to serve the recently developed housing estates pending the erection of a
permanent centre.
Division 7—Langbourne Primary School, Kingswood Drive, Camberwell.—A temporary
centre was opened at this school to serve the newly developed Kingswood estate pending
the provision of an ad hoc centre.
Division 7—Lordship Lane Centre, Lewisham.—A new centre was opened in premises
acquired and adapted for maternity and child welfare and school treatment purposes.
Accommodation for tuberculous men
Preliminary works necessary to allow partial occupation were carried out at Hurlingham
Lodge, Fulham, which was rented from the Parks Committee and the premises brought
