Public inquiries were held by the Ministry of Health in respect of clearance
orders and compulsory purchase orders made by the Council relating to 3,028
houses in 33 areas represented as suitable for action under section 25 of the
Housing Act, 1936.
The Council in December, 1936, being satisfied that the conditions specified
in section 13 of the Housing Act, 1935, were complied with in regard to an area of
46 acres in the borough of Bethnal Green, declared that area to be a redevelopment
area under that section. Operations in connection with this area progressed throughout
1937.
In June the Minister of Health fixed appointed days in respect of overcrowding
in the six metropolitan boroughs referred to in the Annual Report of 1936 as those in
which the fixing of the appointed day was in contemplation, namely, Hampstead,
Holborn, Paddington, St. Marylebone, St. Pancras and Southward. As regards
section 62 of the Housing Act, 1936, the appointed days for these boroughs is 1st
July, 1937, and for the purpose of sections 6 (2), 59, 60 and 64 of the Act the appointed
day is 1st January, 1938.
The fixing of appointed days for the remaining seven boroughs, namely,
Bermondsey, Bethnal Green, Finsbury, Islington, Poplar, Shoreditch and Stepney,
is still under consideration.
