No cases of deafness due to notified cerebro-spinal meningitis occurred this
year. This cause of deafness was almost unknown in this country before the War,
although well recognised in the United States of America, but numerous cases have
occurred since 1915. Only two cases of deafness were ascribed to congenital syphilis.

The high figure for 1924 is due rather to the small number of cases owing to
other causes than to any marked increase in the number of syphilis cases.

Table: Classification has been made of all children who were in the Council's schools for the blind in the spring of 1931. The total number was 218. Of these, 213 were school children of 16 years old and under, the remaining five being girls of 16 to 18 under training at Elm Court (blind) school.
