Owing to the fact that in the period of the year under consideration these diseases have a natural
tendency to increase in prevalence, the reduction shown in August understates the effect of the holiday,
while the figures showing the subsequent increase overstates the effect of the conclusion of the holiday.
Influenza, Bronchitis and Pneumonia.
The deaths(a) attributed to influenza, which in 1909 numbered 1,216 (52 weeks), fell to 723 in
1910 (52 weeks). The deaths from bronchitis numbered 5,043 in 1910, as compared with 6,128 in
1909. In 1910 there were 6,729 deaths attributed to pneumonia, as compared with 7,591 in 1909.

Phthisis.
The deaths from phthisis, fully corrected for institutions, in the Administrative County of
London during 1910 (52 weeks) numbered 5,555, as compared with 6,337 in 1909 (52 weeks).
