Number of
children un
accounted
for as
regards
vaccination
per cent. of
total births
The above table shows increase since 1905 in the proportion of children born who are remaining
unvaccinated, increase which causes serious anxiety to those who are concerned with the limitation of
smallpox in London. Neglect to secure vaccination in infancy will probably in some degree be
compensated for by the rush to the public vaccinator, which will occur, as in the past, when smallpox
again becomes prevalent; but the conditions under which vaccination will then be performed will
not be as satisfactory as those of times when there is no excessive demand for the services of the public
vaccinator; and, beyond this vaccination will, no doubt, in many instances be then too late to prevent
infection.
