The total deaths among children under one year of age from "all causes" at certain age periods in 1910 may be compared with similar figures included in the Annual Reports for the preceding five years as follows:—

With a view to comparing the rates of mortality from the several groups of diseases in the years 1905-10 the following table has been prepared. It will be seen that in 1910 the death-rate from diarrhœal diseases was low. This low death-rate is probably in the main due to the favourable meteorological conditions of 1910.

In the following table are shown rates of mortality from tuberculous diseases in successive years.
The decline observable in this class of disease in the early years of life has to be considered with that
from tuberculous disease at the older ages. The degree in which question of nomenclature may affect
the figures has also to be borne in mind, for in all probability the causes of death stated in certificates
of death of young children, are more likely to be subject to varittion from changes in nomenclature
(a) These rates differ slightly from those shown on page 19, the latter being based upon figures in the Registrar.
General's Annual Summary, whilst the rates shown above are based upon the totals of the births and deaths, as
corrected for each borough by the respective Medical Officers of Health.
