The London Hydraulic Power Company, under the Wharves and Warehouses Steam Power
and Hydraulic Pressure Company's Act, 1871, had power to carry out its works in a portion of the
County of London. This limited area was extended to the whole county by a further Act obtained
by the company in 1884, under which Act it is necessary for the company to obtain the Council's
consent to any works in the County of London, outside the City area, beyond those carried out in an
The figures quoted above do not include the cost of purchasing property required, of settling
claims for compensation payable by the Council, of purchasing and fixing machinery, etc., or of
employing the necessary supervising staff, etc.
Section 69 of the Metropolis Management Act, 1855, provides that no new local sewer shall be
made without the previous approval of the Council.
