Totterdown.fields estate, Tooting.— On the 28th July the Council approved an estimate of
£7,803 for the erection of 20 additional cottages on section B of this estate, the cottages, each of
which will consist of living room, parlour, scullery, and three bedrooms, to be erected by the
builders who had the contract for the other cottages at the same schedule of prices. On the same
day the Council accepted an estimate of £120,317, and sanctioned expenditure up to that amount
for building 414 cottages on the remainder of section B by the same builder on his undertaking
to build them at a reduction of 1½ per cent. on prices contained in the contract for erection of
cottages on section A.

Norbury estate, Croydon.— Onthe 28th July the Council accepted a tender of£37,000for the erection of146cottages on this estate. The following table gives the class and type of cottage proposed, and the amount of accommodation to be provided therein—

Erection of dwellings by the Council in connection with clearances under other Acts.
Rotherhithe.tunnel displacement.— On the 27th January the Council accepted a tender for the
erection of the Swan.lane estate of Hythe, Seaford, and a portion of Winchelsea buildings for 670
persons in five tenements of four rooms, 55 tenements of three rooms, and 75 tenements of two rooms.
On the 7th April the Housing of the Working Classes Committee reported Rye.buildings, Swan.
lane estate, ready for occupation. These buildings contain 20 tenements of two rooms and 20
tenements of three rooms providing accommodation for 200 persons. On the 19th May the
Housing of the Working Classes Committee reported Sandwich.buildings, Swan.lane estate,
ready for occupation. These buildings contain the same number of two and three room tenements
as in Rye.buildings. On the 28th July the Council approved working drawings, specification,
bills of quantities and architect's estimate of £13,892 for the erection by the Works Department
of Brightlingsea.buildings, on Ropemaker's.fields site, Wapping, the buildings to be of five
storeys and to accommodate 340 persons in 65 tenements, 5 of four rooms, 35 of three rooms, 20 of
two rooms, and 5 of one room.
Long.lane and Tabard.street improvement.— On the 30th June the Council accepted a tender
of £14,787 0s. 7d. for the erection of Barnaby.buildings, Leroy.street, Bermondsey, to meet the
requirements of 291 persons displaced by the improvement, the buildings to consist of two five.
storey blocks. These buildings will accommodate 400 persons in 40 tenements of three rooms,
and 40 tenements of two rooms.
School Board rehousing (Norfolk.street site).— On the 7th April the Council accepted a
tender to build 14 cottages on this site.
Greenwich electricity generating.station rehousing (Hughes.fields).— On the 28th July the
Council accepted a tender of £23,119 for the erection of Drake, Raleigh, and Benbow buildings
on three of four surplus plots of land acquired under the Hughes.fields scheme, Deptford. The
buildings will provide accommodation for 660 persons in 8 tenements of four rooms, 74 tenements
of three rooms, and 38 tenements of two rooms.
Mare.street, Hackney, improvement.— On the 24th November the Council accepted a tender
of £17,884 for the erection of Vallette.buildings, the buildings to consist of one block of five
storeys providing accommodation for 416 persons in 39 tenements of two rooms, 34 tenements of
three rooms and 7 tenements of four rooms.
The annual reports of medical officers of health supply the following information concerning
action taken under the Housing of the Working Classes Act.
Paddington.— Negotiations for a site for the erection of houses were continued in 1903,
and plans of dwellings were prepared but are not yet approved. Proposals to acquire houses
and adapt them for the working classes were under the consideration of a committee. A private
company has, within the last two years, commenced such operations within the borough.
Hammersmith.— The report of the town clerk shows that buildings erected by the borough
council under Part III. of the Act were ready for occupation on the 1st January, 1904. The
buildings were erected on land abutting on Yeldham.road at a cost of £5,684 6s. 8d., and were
very quickly let.
