Shoreditch—A large amount of sanitary work in connection with workshops and work places
has been carried out. The Home Office inspector brought to the notice of the vestry 43 workshops
and factories in which there were insanitary conditions, the necessary steps were taken in each case.
Referring to requirements in different districts as to the amount of water-closet accommodation which
should be provided, the medical officer of health states that in 18 districts one water-closet is required
for 20 male persons employed; in four districts the proportion is 1 to 12; in three districts, 1 to 25;
in three other districts 1 to 18, 1 to 16, 1 to 15 respectively; and in four districts there are no fixed
proportions. In factories and workshops where females are employed, in 17 districts the proportion is
one water-closet to every 20 persons; in six districts it was 1 to 12; in two districts, 1 to 25; in
three districts, 1 to 18, 1 to 16, and 1 to 15 respectively; and in four districts there were no proportions.

opened in the district, "but as we keep no trade register and make no periodical inspections of these
places, the notices have not been utilised." The vestry also received from the same source 57 complaints
of variou3 insanitary conditions, which with the exception of two were remedied.
St. George-in-the-East—It was resolved that a register should be provided for each district of
the parish, and that the several inspectors be directed to enter in such register particulars of all
workshops.

Lirnehovse—A tabular statement shows that there were 194 " factory inspections," and 28
nuisances abated.
Mile-end Old-town—The workshops, 424 in number, have been kept under supervision. Information
as to sanitary defects was received from the Home Office inspector. The medical officer of

our district during the last few years."

being 1,331 males and 1,689 females ; in 187 workshops females only were employed. In 11 of the 500
workshops the ventilation was unsatisfactory, in 146 the workrooms were dirty, in 104 the drains
were defective, in 19 the workrooms were damp, in 36 out of the 863 work-rooms overcrowding was
found to exist, in a few instances it appears that separate accommodation for the two sexes was needed.
