NATIONAL ASSISTANCE ACTS 1948 AND 1951
Section 47 - Care of the Aged
Investigations were made during the year of the living conditions of ten
persons of retirement age. Five of these were reported by the health officers
of the St. Pancras Association for the Care of the Aged, four by medical practitioners
and one by the Council s Housing Department.
Six were kept under observation at home together with the provision of
various types of help, e.g. district nurse, home help, dinners, laundry.
One was removed voluntarily to an institution, and at the end of the year
steps were being taken to secure the admission of another.
In the two following cases it was necessary to invoke the provisions of the
National Assistance (Amendment) Act 1951-
Case 231: Mrs. A. aged 86 years. Known to the Department since February 1955,
she had been living alone in a two-roomed flat. Provided with a home help for
three years. Recently ill and her condition deteriorated. She became absent
minded. Kept gas taps open and was once found in a semi-conscious condition. It
became apparent that she had properly cooked meals only when provided by the
home help.
The need for her removal to an institution became urgent, but she was unwilling
to go.
The necessary Order was obtained and she was removed to Luxborough Lodge
on the 11th March, 1958.
Case No 234: Mr. C. aged 84 years, lived alone in one small back room.
Attention drawn by local medical practitioner because the man was seriously ill
and refused to go to hospital.
An order was obtained and he was removed to St. Pancras Hospital on the
26th August, 1958.
