A special enquiry was made during 1924 concerning the deaths which had occurred
from Cancer of the Breast during the previous year.
39 such cases had been registered. No information could be obtained concerning
8 cases, the relatives having left the Borough. Of the remaining 31 cases, 23 were operated
upon, and 8 had no operation. Two of the former died during the operation and are excluded.
This gives 21 operation cases for consideration. 12 of these were operated upon within 1 year
of the growth being noticed. The average duration of life after operation was 2 years and
10 months.
The remaining 9 cases were operated upon more than 1 year after the growth was
first noticed; the average duration of life after operation in these cases was 1 year and 5
months.
Of the 8 cases not operated upon, one lived 10 years, another 8 years, and another 5 years
after the growth was first noticed. These were elderly women, who probably had what is
termed Atrophic Scirrhus, a form in which the disease lasts many years without much
extension. In the remaining 5 cases not operated upon, the average duration of life after
the growth was first noticed was 1 year only.
