In Table 5 on page 93 are set out the 1922 death-rates for England and Wales, the County
of London, the several metropolitan boroughs, and certain of the large towns. It will be seen
that there were five boroughs in London with a worse death-rate than St. Pancras, and 23 with
a better death-rate.
1,904 deaths occurred in Public Institutions in the borough in 1922. Taking from these
the number which were of non-parishioners (628) and adding the number of deaths of St. Pancras
parishioners in Public Institutions without the borough (603)—both from the RegistrarGeneral's
figures—the number of St. Pancras deaths which took place in Public Institutions
is shown to be 1,879, or 60 per cent, of the total deaths.
Infantile Mortality.
337 deaths of St. Pancras infants under one year of age took place during the year.
This is equal to a rate of 74 per thousand births.
In Table 1 on page 86 the corresponding rates for previous years are set out; in Table 4
on page 92 the figures will be found for the different wards and registration sub-districts ; and
in Table 5 on page 93 the infantile mortality rates in England and Wales, the County of London,
the several metropolitan boroughs, and certain of the large towns with populations exceeding
125,000.
In the Tables on the next two pages are shown :—
(1) The causes of death of children under 12 months of age (1922), classified according
to age at death.
(2) The causes of death of children under 12 months of age in 1922 and in the ten
previous years. In this Table the number of births in each year is also stated
for reference.
It will be seen that the deaths from influenza and bronchitis were more numerous than
in the previous year. This was the result of the outbreak of influenza in the beginning of the year,
and caused a considerable increase in the infantile mortality rate for the year.
