1,364 births occurred in Public Institutions in St. Pancras, equal to 28-0 per cent, of the
total births which took place in the borough.
Table 5, on page 93, shows the birth-rate for 1922 of England and Wales, the County of
London, the several metropolitan boroughs, and certain of the large towns with populations
exceeding 125,000.
Illegitimacy.
Of the 4,559 net St. Pancras births, 254, or 5-6 per cent., were returned as illegitimate.
The corresponding figures for 1921, 1920, 1919, 1918, 1917, 1910, 1915, 1914 and 1913, were
5-5, 5-6, 8-4, 9-5, 7-2, 7-0, 5-4, 4-4 and 4-7 per cent, respectively.
Of the 4,865 births in St. Pancras (uncorrected) 293 or 6-1 per cent, were returned as
illegitimate.
Notification of Births.
4,850 notifications of births were received during 1922, including 146 still-births and
4,704 live births, or 97 per cent, of the births registered as having taken place in the borough.
Details in regard to the notifications will be found on page 27.
DEATHS.
The net number of St. Pancras deaths registered during the year was 3,107, making an
annual death rate of 14-6 per thousand population.
The number of deaths registered during the year as having taken place in the borough was 3,219. Of
these, 715 were of persons whose residence was not in St. Pancras (non-parishioners), 628 dying in St. Pancras
institutions, and 87 in other parts of the borough. There were also reported by the Registrar-General 563
deaths of St. Pancras parishioners who died in institutions in other parts of the County of Ijondon and institutions
connected therewith, and 40 who died in other parts of England and Wales. The net figure on which
the death-rate is based is corrected for these out ward and inward transfers.
In Table 1, on page 86, will be found the corresponding figures for previous years. It
will be seen that the death-rate for 1922 was higher than in the previous years.
