Food Factories.—There are eleven poloney and sausage makers in my district,
whose premises are frequently but irregularly inspected. I have not had
occasion to make any seizures. Of the meat, &c., used and the meat in pickle, I
have not found any tainted or unfit for food, and the premises are kept in a
cleaidy and sanitary condition.
Food and Drugs Act.—Two hundred and forty samples of food have been
submitted by me to the Public Analyst for analyses.
Slaughterhouses.—I have made 231 inspections of the slaughterhouses in my
district; the by-laws and regulations have been respected by the licensees,
and the premises kept in a cleanly condition. The animals slaughtered have
been free from disease and of good quality.
Cowhouses.—There are seven licensed cowhouses in the district, registered to
keep 102 cows. There were not any infringements of the by-laws to report.
The animals were in a healthy condition and free from contagious disease.
Milkshaps and Dairies.—1 made 587 inspections of premises registered
for the sale of milk and found them fairly well kept, the small general
shops not being quite up to the standard of the larger vendors, where nothing
but dairy produce is sold.
Ice Cream Makers.—Frequent inspections have been made of the premises
where ice creams are sold, also the vendors' barrows in the streets. The
utensils have also been examined, and only in three cases has it been necessary
to report any infringements of the regulations.
Unsound Food.—The following articles have been destroyed as unfit for
human food:—
12 cwt. of pears.
½ box of lemons.
20 lbs. of plums.
5 lbs. of cherries.
24 bananas.
1 carcase of a pig.
Legal Proceedings.—I attended the Police Courts 43 times in connection with
the discharge of my duties as Food Inspector, this being a decrease of 17
attendances on those of 1902.
I am, yours obediently,
J. Osborne.
In pector of Meat and other Foods.
Town Hall, Pancras Road,
Canal Boats Act.
To the Medical Officer of Health.
Sir,
During the year 1903 I made 111 inspections on the Regent's Canal in
connection with the above Act. Seventy-one registered dwelling boats were
inspected; in three cases I had to report infringements of the by-laws to
the Committee, when the owners were given notice and the necessary work
carried out without resort to legal proceedings.
Yours obediently,
J. Osborne,
Canal Boats Inspector.
