Licensed Cowhouses.—There are now only eight licensed cowsheds in the
divisions, one Licensee did not renew his license, having given up keeping
cows.
I paid 138 visits to the cowsheds and found them fairly satisfactory.
Marketing Places.—I made 1562 inspections of the various market places,
including butchers', pork butchers', poulterers', fishmongers', Greengrocers'
shops, &c., and made applications to the Magistrates sitting at the Police
Courts to condemn and order the destruction of certain unsound food. The
following food was destroyed at the Council's Dust Destructor, in addition
to that found at slaughter-houses:—
78 lbs. plaice.
1 cwt. skate.
1 cwt. mussels.
34 cwt. potatoes.
25 ducks.
22 fowls.
78 tins of sardines.
18 tins of milk.
Also a quantity of oranges, apples, plums, lemons, &c.
Prepared Foods.—There is only one tripe boiler who dresses tripe and
prepares livers, hearts, and other organs for consumption by domestic animals,
as well as by man, and sells both classes of food at the same shop. I frequently
called here aud always found it satisfactory.
Meat Extractor and Sausage Maker.—I also visited these premises and found,
with one exception, the meat in preparation for food sweet and sound.
Since making my last Report I have been instructed to supervise the makers
of ice cream and other similar commodities in respect to the carrying out of
the London County Council By-laws. There are 138 makers in the divisions,
and I have found the premises, &c., fairly clean and the By-laws carried out,
with few exceptions, where I found ice cream made, or partly made, in living
rooms.
I am, &c.,
H. R. Child,
Inspector of Meat and other Foods.
Borough of St. Pancras,
Town Hall.
1904.
To the Medical Officer of Health.
Sir,
I beg to submit to you my Annual Report for the year ending December 31st,
1903, for the South and West Divisions of the Borough.
Markets.
The market streets, stalls, costers' barrows, greengrocers', fish and provision
shops have been inspected daily. I have not made any seizures of unsound
food or fruit during the year, against fourteen seizures for the year 1902.
This is no doubt in consequence of constant inspection, dealers probably finding
it does not pay to expose unwholesome food.
