HOUSING OF THE WORKING CLASSES ACT, 1890.
Part I. Scheme.
On the 12th February, 1891, the Medical Officer of Health of St. Pancras
represented to the London County Council the three areas known as Somers
Town, Brantome Place, and Prospect Terrace, under Part I. of the Housing of
the Working Classes Act, 1890. The London County Council considered that
the areas should not be dealt with under Part I., and after much intercommunication
between the Council and the Vestry of St. Pancras the Yestry
appealed to the Home Secretary. An inquiry was held on his behalf and he
made an award on the 27th June, 1893, to the following effect:—
As to Area No. 1, Somers Town.
(a) That so much that lies to the west of Chalton Street, but south of
Drummond Street, excluding Christopher Place, should be dealt with
by the London County Council, under Part I. of the Act.
(b) That Christopher Place, and so much as lies to the west of Chalton
Street, but north of Drummond Street, should be dealt with by the
Yestry under Part II. of the Act, without any contribution from the
County Council.
(c) That so much as lies to the east of Chalton Street should be dealt
with by the Yestry under Part II. of the Act, the County Council
contributing one-third of the expense.
As to Area No. 2, Prospect Terrace and Derry Street.
As to Area No. 3, Brantome Place.
That these Areas should be dealt with by the Vestry under Part II. of the
Act, the County Council contributing one-half of the expense.
Area No. 1 (a)—The London County Council is now dealing with the
area "that lies to the west of Chalton Street but south of Drummond Street,
excluding Christopher Place," by demolition and reconstruction under Part I.
of the Housing of the Working Classes Act, 1890.
Part II. Schemes.
Area No. 1 (£)—The Vestry of St. Pancras in 1893 dealt with the area
that "lies to the west of Chalton Street, but north of Drummond Street,"
house by house under Part II. of the Act by serving notices on the owners
of the individual houses to abate nuisances, and execute such works and do
such things as might be necessary, and d'd not direct any scheme for demolition
and reconstruction to be prepared.
