DIPHTHERIA.
This disease caused 45 deaths during 1884, being fewer than
since 1880, and 33 less than last year. The proportion per 1000
deaths from "all causes" was 9.3, and 0.18 in every 1000 of
population, the annual average of deaths from diphtheria during
the previous ten years had been 8.6 in every 1000 deaths from
"all causes." In London the number of deaths was 11.l7 per
1000 deaths from "all causes," or M2.7 above that of St. Pancras,
and 0.25 per 1000 of population.

WHOOPING COUGH.
In 1884 there were 202 deaths from this disease, or 130 more
than during the previous year. The proportion of deaths to
1000 deaths from "all causes" was 42.1, as compared with 15.3
in 1883, and per 1000 of population the proportion was 0.83 in
1884, as compared with 0.3 in the previous year.
In London these proportions were 38.3 and 0.83 respectively
