in every 1000 deaths from 'all causes' and 1.21 in every 1000
of population. In London these proportions were 56.0 and
1.19 respectively. Whooping cough, has therefore, been
exceptionally fatal in St. Pancras.

The following table shows the incidence of this disease upon the sub-registration districts of St. Pancras. All the deaths from whooping cough occurring in public institutions are referred to the districts to which they belong, but 138 deaths from 'all causes,' which could not be referred are omitted from consideration.

Typhus Fever.
One death was registered after an inquest from 'apoplexy
typhus fever,' this being the only case reported to the Department.
The death had been previously registered as being
due to pneumonia. A child of the deceased had been
removed to the Homerton Fever Hospital, under the belief
that it was suffering from typhus, but I was informed by the
Medical Superintendent of that Institution that it did not
suffer from th&t disease. An investigation into the circumstances
of the case has led me to the belief that the first case
was not typhus, and therefore during 1882 we may assume
that St. Pancras has been free from that disease.
But 52 deaths from this disease were registered in the
whole of London during 1882.
Enteric Fever.
Enteric fever caused 69 deaths being 3 more than in the
previous year, and 6.3 more than the average of the preceding 10
years. The number of deaths in 1882 is in the proportion of
14.5 per 1000 of total deaths from 'all causes,' and 0.29 per
1000 of population. In London these proportions were 11.7
