Statement of Work done under the Sale of Food and Drugs Acts.
During the year 1,849 samples of foods and drugs were submitted
to the Public Analyst for analysis, compared with 1,789 in
1914, 1,849 in 1913, and 1,500 in 1912.
Of the 1,849 samples analysed 940 were purchased as test or
informal samples, while 909 were purchased officially.
Of the 909 official samples submitted for analysis 86 or 9 4
per cent. were reported to be adulterated or not up to standard,
and of those samples which were purchased informally or as test
samples 73, or 7.7 per cent. were found adulterated or not up to
standard.
The total adulterations reported were 159, or 8.6 per cent. of
the samples submitted, compared with 10.2 per cent. in 1914, 11 per
cent. in 1913, and 18.0 per cent. in 1912.
The percentage of milk samples found to be adulterated was
7.8 compared with 7.6 in 1914, 9. in 1913, and 10.9 in1912.
In 52 out of the 86 cases in which adulterations were detected
in the official samples proceedings were instituted against the
vendor, compared with 67 in 1914, 84 in 1913, and 86 in 1912.
The total amount received in penalties under the above Acts
during the year amounted to £108 15s. 0d., and the costs to
£24 17s. od., making a total of £133 12s. 0d., compared with
£130 is. 0d. in 1914 and £143 7s. 6d. in 1913.
