274 Report of the Medical Officer of Health.
DRUGS.
77 samples classified under this heading were analysed, and
five reported against as being adulterated or not up to standard.
The samples reported against were informal samples of crushed
linseed, Epsom salts, tincture of iodine, saffron, and one formal
sample of saffron.
Proceedings were taken against the vendor of the sample of
saffron, who successfully pleaded warranty.
In the other cases the adulteration was small or trivial, and
the Committee decided to warn the vendors.
OTHER ARTICLES.
165 samples classified under this heading were examined,
27 or 16.0 per cent. being reported against as either adulterated
or not up to the required standard.
The chief adulteration occurred in samples of vinegar, 32
samples of which were analysed and 18, or 56 per cent. were found
to be deficient in acetic acid.
The deficiency ranged from five to 43 per cent. in the 18 samples
reported against.
In six cases proceedings were taken against the vendors,
and penalties and costs amounting to £6 12s. were imposed.
ICE CREAM.
12 samples of ice cream were purchased and analysed, and
found to be genuine.
These samples were purchased from itinerant ice cream vendors
on Whit Monday. Six of the samples were taken on Putney Heath
and six on Clapham Common.
